This is the week where insulin does the maximum work, while we do the bare minimum. And while the cliched soan papdis and besan laddoos make their way into our homes and bellies, we’ve picked our regional favourites, some known and some not so known.
There’s a mithai for every region. 😋Some of our favourites are:
Mysore Pak- Karnataka
Nolen gur sandesh, rasgullas- Bengal
Khubani ka meetha- Hyderabad
Bebinca- Goa
Gulab Jamun - Zomatoland
Dairy Milk- Ogilvyland
Apart from these, there are a few not-so-known Mumbai Mithais that still hit the spot. These typical Mumbai Mithais are unknown even to a lot of Mumbaikars for many years…
Like the rich and moreish Aflatoon - A desi protein bar packed with equal amounts of guilt and fat. A tasty nostalgic treat not to be confused with the tasteless nostalgic blunder - Aflatoon the movie.
Or the desi version of the Italian classic Sfogliatelle - The humble Mawa Puff or Warki Samosa. Layers of puff pastry stuffed with pure mawa. This warki samosa will make you want to work out.
Next is our adaptation of the north Indian classic Malpua, but made with eggs and a pile of rabri and dry fruits. However, this adopted child is also sometimes seen with bad company like Nutella, cheese, and even blueberry jam.
Another born and raised Bombay Mithai is Sohil’s favourite - The Mahim Halwa (also known as Bombay Ice Halwa).
Fun fact: The name has nothing to do with ice but is called so because of the sprinkling of icing sugar on top.
One long-missed mithai with a lot of nostalgia for Shais is Soan Papdi’s big brother - Sutarfeni. Layered in textures and flavours, this sweet cloud simply melts in the mouth.
A few more honourable mentions include Mawa ni Macchi, Patli Jalebi, Sev Barfi and Badam ni rotli.
How many of these have you tried? And what’s your favourite place to try them? Let us know in the comments.
What we are (re) listening to this week:
Meme of the week:
There have been days of deleting folders of movies and songs, but what happens if the only copy of the original movie file itself gets deleted?
Did you know?
Pixar accidentally deleted Toy Story 2. In the days of LAN settings, an employee hit the delete button, thinking he was deleting it from his desktop. Instead, by mistake he had deleted it over the company server. So when his colleague was looking at his screen and the list of files, suddenly, they went from forty to four. He grabbed the phone and called the server room to unplug the machine, but most of it was lost forever.
It was sheer luck that a technical director had all the files copied on her home computer when she was on maternity leave, and most of the files were revived.
Which leads us to an even scarier notion: What if AWS goes down?
Over 60 percent of all Ethereum nodes rely on cloud-based services, with 25 percent running on just one provider: Amazon Web Services (AWS).
